These dark chocolate toffee bars really hit the mark when you’re looking for a delicious treat that’s both easy to make and indulgent.
This recipe for dark chocolate toffee bars with walnuts really hits the mark when you’re looking for a treat that’s both easy to make and indulgent. They have all of the delicious components of an amazing chocolate bar: a crumbly cookie base that’s studded with chocolate chips and walnuts, a thin coating of dark chocolate and the whole thing is topped off with a generous sprinkling of toffee bits.
The great thing about these bars is that you can knock them together in under an hour and the majority of that time they are just doing their own thing in the oven. Which leaves you plenty of time to get on with other more important tasks…like pouring over your latest cookbook find!
I wanted this recipe to be something you could put together quite easily with ingredients you might already have in your store cupboard. If you don’t have toffee bits, try looking for them in your local grocery store beside the chocolate chips. If you can’t find toffee bits, you could substitute a chopped-up toffee chocolate bar or even just sprinkle with some nuts.
I like to cut these bars into larger squares, but of course, you can cut them into any size you like. They make excellent portable treats, so bringing them with you to potlucks, picnics, (and don’t forget, in your lunch box!) will be no problem at all.
We love to eat these bars as is, but sometimes on a whim, I’ll smash them up and sprinkle them over big bowls of vanilla ice cream. Divine!

Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely. Feel free to use any chocolate that tastes good to you! Milk chocolate or white chocolate are good alternatives. I have made the bars with both options and they were delicious. Although I haven’t tried white chocolate, I imagine it would also be a good option.
I like to use the microwave to melt butter. Place the butter into a microwavable dish and microwave for 30 seconds on high. Give the butter a good stir and if it isn’t all melted, microwave for another 15 seconds.
If you don’t have a microwave, melt the butter in a small pot on the stovetop over medium low heat.
Remove the bars from the baking pan using the parchment paper handles. Place the bars on a cutting board and using a sharp knife, cut the bars into strips using long smooth motions. Finally cut into even sized bars.
Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for 4 – 5 days. I haven’t tried freezing them, but I suspect they would hold up nicely.

Dark Chocolate Toffee Bars
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cip brown sugar packed
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup dark chocolate chips
- ¾ cup chopped walnuts
- ½ cup toffee bits
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350F (180C).
- Spray a 13x9x2 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Line with parchment paper to fully cover the bottom of the dish and overhang along two sides. Set the pan aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, stir together the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Try to break down any lumps of brown sugar.
- Add in the melted butter and vanilla and mix with a wooden spoon until everything comes together and resembles course crumbs. Next, stir in ½ cup of the chocolate chips and the walnut pieces.
- Tip the contents into your prepared pan and lightly press the mixture into the pan.
- Place the pan in the middle rack of the oven and bake for 25 – 30 minutes until the cookie bar starts to turn lightly golden on top.
- Bring the pan out of the oven and immediately, while the cookie bars are still hot, sprinkle the rest of the chocolate chips over the top and let stand for 2 minutes. The chocolate will melt from the heat of the cookie. After a couple minutes, use a palette knife or a small spatula to spread the chocolate over the top of the bars. Sprinkle the toffee bits all over the melted chocolate.
- Let the bars cool on a wire rack until the chocolate is set. Remove the bars from the pan by using the edges of the overhanging parchment to lift the bars straight out onto a cutting board. Cut your bars into 16 pieces and enjoy!
